A term in linguistics referring to a peer of a person's own language who is of the same nationality but may be of a different social class or rank. This term is sometimes used in sociolinguistics to describe a type of speech community where there is a clear distinction between the 'speech' of those belonging to higher social strata and those of lower social strata within the same language community.
