mahratta Definition

A member of a people of Aryan origin living in central and western India, especially Maharashtra. Historically, they were dominant in the Mahratta Confederacy that existed from the late 17th century to the early 19th century, which challenged Mughal rule in India and expanded to control much of the Indian subcontinent.
