The mesophyl is the middle layer of the leaf, situated between the upper epidermis and the lower epidermis. This layer includes mesophyll cells, which are responsible for photosynthesis. Mesophyl cells usually have a thicker cell wall and chloroplasts, and are often loosely packed to allow for better gas exchange.
