swordfishes Definition

Any of several swordfish-like fishes of the family Xiphiidae, also a general term for any similar fish with a long, flat, sword-like upper jaw or bill. There is only one species of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) recognized, but the term is sometimes used more broadly to include several close relatives and similar-looking fish.
