Definition:A branch of Islam led by the descendants of the Islamic prophet Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law, Ali, and his descendants. Shi'ites believe that the first of these descendants, Ali, was the rightful successor to Muhammad as the leader of the Muslim community, and that his legitimacy was continued through his descendants.

Example:In different ways, both Ithna 'Asharis and Twelvers adhere to the concept of Imamate.

Definition:A second branch of Shi'a Islam that behaves in a manner similar to the Twelver Shi'ites but has a slightly different theology and practice. They usually do not distinguish themselves much from Twelvers, except for some minor differences in beliefs.
